The Smoky Mountains get their name from the clouds that hang over the ridges, and sometimes those clouds bring rain. A wet day doesn’t have to ruin your vacation: Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are packed with indoor attractions, and a cozy day at the cabin can be the highlight of the trip. Here are our family’s favorite rainy-day plans.
1. WonderWorks (Pigeon Forge)

The upside-down building on the Parkway is an indoor science playground with more than 100 hands-on exhibits. Our kids climbed the climbing wall, lay on the Bed of Nails and played the giant floor piano, and there’s a hurricane simulator for anyone who wants to feel 70-plus mph winds. It’s an easy half-day out of the rain. Read our full WonderWorks review.
2. Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies (Gatlinburg)

Walk under sharks in the underwater tunnel, touch a stingray, and watch the penguins. Ripley’s is one of the best aquariums in the Southeast, and it’s all indoors in downtown Gatlinburg.
3. Titanic Museum Attraction (Pigeon Forge)

Board the half-scale ship with a passenger card and learn your passenger’s fate at the end. It’s moving, educational and fully indoors.
4. A dinner show

Pigeon Forge’s dinner shows are all indoors, so a rainy evening is a good time to book one. Dolly Parton’s Stampede, with its trick riders and rings of fire, and the comedy at the Hatfield & McCoy dinner show are two family favorites. Book ahead, since they sell out. Our guide to Pigeon Forge dinner shows compares the Stampede, Pirates Voyage and Hatfield & McCoy.
5. The Old Mill (Pigeon Forge)

Duck into the shops around the historic Old Mill, browse the General Store, and stay for a warm bowl of corn chowder at the Old Mill Restaurant. Read about our evenings at the Old Mill.
6. Forbidden Caverns (Sevierville area)
Underground, it doesn’t matter what the weather’s doing. The guided cave tour at Forbidden Caverns passes through cavern rooms, streams and mineral formations, and caves stay cool year-round.
7. A moonshine tasting (grown-ups)
A rainy afternoon is made for a tasting-room crawl in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. See our guide to moonshine tasting in the Smokies.
8. Stay in at the cabin

Sometimes the best rainy-day plan is not going anywhere. At Firefly Hollow Cabin, there’s a whole downstairs for it: a 4-player arcade, ping-pong, foosball and an Infinity game table, plus board games for the dining table.

When everyone’s worn out, put on a movie on the 4K TV with the Blu-ray player, light the gas fireplace, and listen to the rain on the roof. Or soak in the private hot tub on the screened deck, where you stay dry while the forest gets wet.
Firefly Hollow Cabin sleeps 11, every bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom, and it’s just minutes from Sevierville and Pigeon Forge with no steep mountain roads. See the cabin, or check your dates below.
